Why We Date

Why We Date

We have some of the oddest mating rituals in the animal kingdom as humans. Most species only associate with members of the opposite sex in order to reproduce. Other than the necessity to keep the species alive, there is no emotional bond that binds them together for the rest of their lives. Now, this isn't to suggest that all animals are like this; certain species do mate for life, but they make up a small percentage of the population.

Sure, many species have mating rituals that are comparable to ours. Male birds flaunt their bright plumage in an attempt to attract females, but is this dating or just a form of seduction? Isn't that, after all, the point of going on dates? To seduce the person we've had our eye on?

Dating is a sort of seduction, however it can take a lot longer for us humans to achieve the intended consequences. With the exception of humans, dolphins, and some primates, animals marry to ensure the survival of their species, not for the sake of pleasure. It is the desire to survive as a species for most animals.

Humans have elevated the entire dating/seduction ritual to previously unimaginable heights. Consider all the things we go to in order to impress that specific someone. And why do we want to impress them in the first place? Because we believe we like them, and if we don't try everything we can to lure them using all kinds of dating methods and techniques, someone else will, which is simply unacceptable.

So, why do we date in the first place?

To make an impression on someone we're interested in? On that one, I'd say sure. I can't think of a better purpose to invest that much time and money than to do exactly that.

To ensure the survival of the human species? This is a much more personal question. Is the world really in need of more people? That is a point of contention. For the most part, I believe it is for selfish motives, such as having someone come after us who will carry the family name forward into the future.

Is it just for the sake of it? There's another way to look at it now. It's exciting to meet new individuals. Especially if you have feelings for them. Dating is entertaining, and it teaches us new ways of thinking and approaching others.

The topic of why we date is difficult to explain, but whatever your reasons are, it is a part of what makes us human.
